Qualified Dietitian

Dietitians are tertiary qualified in food, nutrition and dietetics. Qualified dietitians have undertaken a 4 year course of study that has included supervised and assessed professional practice in public health nutrition, medical nutrition therapy and food service management. Dietitians are also qualified to work in a private clinical practice, hospitals and the medical nutrition industry. They provide expert nutrition advice for people of all ages and prescribe dietary treatments for many conditions such as diabetes, food allergies, cancers, gastro-intestinal diseases, and overweight and obesity.

My qualifications include a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutrition & Dietetics)(Hons) obtained from the Queensland University of Technology, as well as Certification in Medical Nutrition Therapy for Bariatric Surgery. I am accredited with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and vice-convenor of the DAA Bariatric Surgery Interest Group. I am also an Associate Member of the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) and Diabetes Queensland.

You Are Not Alone!

So, why is an expert Bariatric Dietitian an essential part of your team?

We are trained to understand the specific needs of a patient before and after surgery including how to obtain nutrients essential for good health.

We guide you through the before and after surgery dietary phases. We are aware of the nutritional implications of bariatric surgeries include the ability or inability to sufficient fuel your body with the necessary nutrients to achieve your health and weight management goals, the speed of which you can eat, the types of food you can eat, food behaviours, and liquid vs. solid meals.

We provide recommendations for food choices, portion sizes and eating behaviours, ensuring you maintain a nutritious diet specific for your choice of surgery.

We assist patients in developing practical meal ideas, menu planning and shopping, and quick and easy food preparation methods to help make their diets more interesting, enjoyable, and importantly, nutritious.

We help you to realise your weight management goals and provide techniques to help prevent weight regain. See my Services page for more detail.

I am passionate about supporting people (who have taken this big step), to achieve their goals and be as healthy as possible for the rest of their lives.

I always tailor consults to YOUR individual needs, ensuring each of my clients walk away with specialised information relating directly to their circumstances.

I consider everything from medical and nutritional needs, eating habits, food preferences, as well as your social and work life before we formulate a plan that will see you get the most out of your weight management surgery.

Knowing that some people have difficulty accessing support due to location, time or cost I offer a telehealth (phone or video) service Australia-wide.

To support you on this journey I offer a special all-inclusive Bariatric Package for clients undergoing surgery. Contact me today to ask about these packages or individual services.

About

Louise Elvin-Walsh

Qualified Dietitian | Bariatric Surgery Nutrition (before & after) | Weight Management | Gastrointestinal and Digestive Conditions

Hi, I’m Louise, and I’m a qualified Accredited Practising Dietitian who provides safe, evidence-based dietary advice and management to individuals (in health and disease). Seeing patients/clients for anything and everything in General Private Practice has necessitated having an excellent knowledge base and has provided me with a brilliant opportunity to utilise a large range of clinical skills. It is wonderful to observe improvements in my clients’ health and wellbeing, anthropometric and biochemical measures as well as receiving positive feedback from them about how they feel about themselves and their quality of life now.

My work in Queensland Health’s Hospital and Health Services has shown me the difference that a Dietitian can make to managing diseases at an acute stage. It has also made me extremely motivated to prevent chronic lifestyle diseases.

I truly relish the challenge of keeping up to date with all areas of clinical nutrition. However, I have a special interest in the following areas:

With a 17+ year background in Telecommunications, (more recently involving delivery of Dietetic Consultations via. Telehealth for a Tertiary Hospital), I have a proven track record for building rapport via. phone and video (as well as in person).

Supporting patients before and after Bariatric Surgery is a passion of mine. In an effort to explore ways for dietitians to support geographically remote patients' post-bariatric surgery I conducted a research project which culminated in the publication of “Nutritional monitoring of patients post-bariatric surgery: implications for smartphone applications” in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, United Kingdom in 2017.

In 2018 the Centre for Advanced Learning Medical Nutrition Therapy for Bariatric Surgery course provided me with the most up-to-date training in this area of nutrition and dietetics for bariatric surgery patients. I am also an Optifast® Accredited Practitioner and have training in Weight Management Psychology and Motivational Interviewing.

Thanks for visiting my website. I look forward to supporting you in achieving your wellness goals.

Healthy Regards,

Do I need a referral?

You don't need a referral to see a dietitian to claim a refund from your private health fund.

Veteran Affairs patients and those on Chronic Disease Management (formerly EPC) plans do require a referral from your doctor.

See details below under Veterans Referrals and Medicare Rebates.

What is a Care Plan?

A care plan is a plan prescribed by your doctor, when you meet certain medical criteria. This entitles you to five visits claimable through Medicare each calendar year.

Chronic Disease Management
What is your cancellation policy?

We strive to provide an excellent and specialised service, with adequate availability that suits your timetable. Certain appointment times, particularly after-hours appointments are highly sought after. We do our best to ensure you won’t miss your valuable appointments by offering a free reminder service. We expect however that you respect that late cancellation of appointments or non-attendance disadvantages not only your treating practitioner, but other patients who may have been in great need of an appointment. Failure to provide as least 1 full working days’ notice of cancellation will attract a cancellation fee of $50 of your treatment charge. If you fail to attend your appointment, the full treatment fee will be charged.

It is not the aim to make profits from cancellation fees, rather to make sure those appointment times are kept available for others who need them. Failure to attend an appointment is unfair to other patients and take up the dietitian’s time unnecessarily.

Should you need to change your appointment, please contact the clinic as least 24 hours prior to the scheduled time to avoid paying the full fee. Chronic Disease Management (formerly EPC) will be billed our private consultation fee.

Clinic-Based Private Consultations

Consultations are covered under ‘extras’ in your private health fund. Check with your private health insurance to see if you are eligible. Refunds vary depending upon your private health insurance. Fees are payable at the time of consultation and Cash, EFTPOS, Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Long consultations by arrangement.

On the spot private health insurance claims available for in-clinic appointments via. HICAPS.

Item numbers of note are 500 for an Initial Consultation and 600 for a Review.

  • Standard Consultation
    $60
  • Couples Review
    $30 (each)
